Zhou Zhilin survived in the Nanjing Massacre when he was 12 years old. He witnessed with his father in a hideout that his uncle Zhou Lixin was killed by Japanese army. Some survivors of the Nanjing Massacre held family memorial rites for their lost relatives at the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, ahead of the national memorial day for the atrocity.
