Zhu Chi died in Yuhuatai

Introduction

Despite the valiant efforts of the Chinese army in the defense battle, the city of Nanjing fell in only one week. The Chinese army suffered heavy casualties. But many soldiers left a heroic yet tragic mark in history. Major General Zhu Chi and his men repeatedly repelled the attacking Japanese army to keep Yuhuatai position. Zhu and many others eventually died in the battle as they were greatly outnumbered by the enemy.

Major General Gao Zhisong and his men stood firm in Yuhuatai in the battle from Dec. 9, and fought the Japanese army hand-to-hand. Facing a repeatedly reinforced and overwhelmingly powerful enemy, the 264th Brigade led by Gao Zhisong, and the reinforcement, the 262th Brigade led by Zhu Chi, coordinated their combat and kept the Yuhuatai stronghold until Dec. 12, when finally their ammunition and reinforcements ran out and they themselves died a heroic death. Gao was promoted by the Chinese government to the rank of Lieutenant General posthumously in June 1939.
